Carlos has always had a passion for helping others. His life as a first responder in Costa Rica put him in constant contact with emergencies, saving lives in critical moments. However, he felt that something was missing. He didn’t want to limit himself to responding to accidents; he wanted to be part of a more profound change—one that would inspire him.
That void began to fill the moment he joined TECHO Rica as a volunteer. His first experience in a community had such a profound impact on him that there was no way he wouldn’t return. Seeing up close the realities faced by so many families, Carlos felt his perspective on life shift. “Volunteering opened my eyes,” he recalls. It was there that he learned to appreciate things he had previously taken for granted: a mattress of his own, a safe place to rest.
Every construction project or community activity brings him closer to people and to his purpose. Helping to set up a community kitchen or build a decent home alongside a family isn’t just work; it’s a way to show love and offer dignity. For Carlos, volunteering isn’t just about taking action—it’s about connection: with others, with himself, and with a vision of a more just world.
“Sharing with families and supporters brings me great joy. It makes me feel like I have family all across the country,” says Carlos. Each experience strengthens his commitment and reaffirms his belief that change is possible.
