In the Jardines de San Juan neighborhood of Mexico City, María de Jesús Padilla—better known as “Chuy”—has become the heart of the Community Center. Every Saturday, her home comes alive with energy and creativity as she leads workshops for seniors, teaching them how to transform recycled materials into works of art. For Chuy, caring for the environment isn’t just a passion—it’s a way of life that she seeks to share with her community.

However, his story wasn't always full of color and hope. His home, once made of weathered wood, was taking a beating from the elements and climate change. Every rainy season was a struggle, but what worried him most was the bathroom. With makeshift solutions that harmed the land, Chuy felt he was going against his commitment to the environment.

Everything changed when TECHO came to her community. The construction of her new home and a dry toilet not only improved her quality of life, but also gave her back the peace of mind that comes from knowing her actions no longer harm the planet. Now, her home is not only a safe haven, but also a workshop where art and environmental awareness come together.
