10 Key Features of Resilient Housing: The Climate Is Changing, and So Is Housing

In a context where the effects of climate change are felt most acutely in low-income communities in Latin America and the Caribbean, Resilient Housing represents an immediate and transformative solution. Developed by TECHO part of the global “Roof Over Our Heads” (ROOH) campaign under the UN Race to Resilience initiative, this project—which was piloted in six countries—offers an affordable, sustainable housing model adapted to the environmental challenges faced by the most vulnerable communities.

Resilient Housing represents a new paradigm by combining technical innovation and community-based efforts to build safer, more sustainable, and more dignified living spaces. Its design incorporates recycled materials, natural ventilation, flood resistance, and a modular system that allows the structure to expand over time.

Why Build Resilient Housing?

‎1. It’s built quickly: thanks to the joint efforts of volunteers and the community, the house is built in just two days.

2. Recycled materials: The use of these materials minimizes the environmental impact and improves the sustainability of the home.

3. Protects against flooding: Its elevated structure on stilts prevents water from damaging the home’s materials or putting families at risk.

4. Offers comfort and durability: The panels provide thermal and acoustic insulation, as well as waterproofing, which reduces moisture.

5. Reduces heat: The use of ventilated panels and large openings creates airflow that keeps the interior cooler.

6. Use natural light: Translucent polycarbonate brightens the interior and reduces electricity consumption as well as the risk of fire.

7. Promotes cross-ventilation: The location and size of the doors and windows allow air to circulate, improving the well-being of the residents.

8. Strengthens the social fabric: community-building strengthens social bonds and collective resilience.

9. Minimizes the environmental footprint: Using recycled materials, modular panels, and lightweight transportation, each home is built with a focus on conserving resources and reducing its impact on the planet.

 10. Allows for growth and redesign: its modular system makes it easy to expand in the future to meet each family’s needs.

At TECHO, we are committed not only to rebuilding, but also to reimagining. Building a more just and sustainable future is a collective effort.
