Two weeks ago, Oscar Boije of Techo EU participated in the Global Humanitarian & Development Aid Event, AidEx 2013, which was held in Brussels, Belgium. The event, sponsored by the European Commission, Red Cross Eu, Ford, UKTI and UNHCR among others, was also attended by around 100 exhibitors.
Techo EU used the event to make contact with the European Commission’s Humanitarian Organization (ECHO), Voluntary Service Overseas UK, CUSO, Land Rover Jaguar, the Humanitarian Logistics Association and also Global Hand – leads with Techo EU now aims to pursue in the hope of established new partnerships or collaborations in Europe or Latin America.
Yet aside from making new contacts, Techo EU is also using such events to continue to position itself as a global NGO, and to expand our knoweldge of the key actors within the humanitarian and development sector in Europe.
Last week, back in London, Techo EU was also present at intelligence2 and OECD’s debate on ending extreme global poverty/. The event was extremely interesting, with debate focussing upon the benefits and importance of bottom-up or top-down responses to poverty and inequality.
New connections
This event was attended by Techo EU’s multidisciplinary team that has been established in Kings Cross, London. “London is the perfect place for TECHO to generate strategic alliances with business and international organisations with European presence”, explained Sebastián Smart, Director of Corporate Development in the office. In this new space, the organisation is seeking to raise awareness of the poverty that exists in Latin American slums, as well as coordinating the search for new funds to contribute to TECHO’s work.
By expanding its operation to Europe, TECHO, which began in Latin America, has achieved one of its goals, namely that of seeking new networks committed to the work developed by the organisation’s young volunteers in conjunction with Latin American slum residents.
“TECHO, as a Latin American organization working in informal slums, has a great potential to contribute, with its work and experience, to the work undertaken by the various offices of the United Nations, as a potential agent to spread and ensure compliance in the region of the Guiding Principles on extreme poverty and human Rights»», said Magdalena Sepúlveda – Special Rapporteur of Extreme Poverty for the United Nations.
