René Perez Joglar, known as Residente, will arrive on the island this Wednesday, October 4, to donate $200,000, which he will deliver in person to ensure that the funds reach the people and will be used to purchase basic necessities and rebuild homes.
At Residente's initiative, Univision Communications Inc. agreed to match Residente's personal donation to support the island's recovery.
For two weeks, Residente has been posting a message on his social media asking his followers to bring basic necessities to his concerts, which will then be donated to Puerto Rico. Residente’s followers in Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile have joined the effort by donating everything from diapers to canned food.
Following Residente’s call on social media, the Chilean consulting firm CLYC facilitated the necessary collaboration for TECHO Residente to work together. Residente will bring Laura Sánchez, Director of Volunteering and Teams for Latin America and the Caribbean, and Estuardo Fuentes, Regional Director for Mexico and the Caribbean, to visit vulnerable communities in early October. Based on the communities’ needs, a plan will be developed that includes potential solutions related to emergency housing, home repairs, habitat improvement, and community service, among other relevant aspects. Atthe same time, a call for volunteers from various Latin American countries will be issued, and a call for youth participation in Puerto Rico will also be launched.
TECHO a Latin American organization dedicated to alleviating poverty in informal settlements in 19 Latin American countries. The organization will include Puerto Rico after the island was hit by Hurricane Maria, the worst hurricane in the country's history.
