Desigualdad económica, crecimiento de aislamiento en mega-ciudades y el desempleo juvenil figuraron dentro de los temas más importantes a los cuales el mundo debe enfocar sus esfuerzos, de acuerdo a la recién celebrada Cumbre sobre la Agenda Global, espacio en el que participó la actual gerenta de TECHO-Ecuador, Michelle Arévalo-Carpenter.
El espacio, que se llevó a cabo en Abu Dhabi entre el 18 y el 20 de noviembre pasado, formó parte del grupo de expertos que durante esos dos días intercambió ideas como parte de la Red de Consejos de Agenda Global del Foro Economico Mundial, que está conformada por más de 80 grupos de expertos académicos, empresariales, líderes de sociedad civil, gobierno y organismos inter-gubernamentales.
“Esta Cumbre es oportuna en medio de los numerosos desafíos globales sin precedentes que afectan nuestro mundo”, explicó Michelle y luego agregó: “En el actual contexto de incertidumbre, tenemos el reto de encontrar soluciones jóvenes, denunciantes y propositivas. Esta cumbre nos brinda la oportunidad de explorar innovaciones para superar la pobreza estructural. Será importante no quedarse en la teoría y vincular la colaboración con los sectores empresariales y gubernamentales, clave para llevar estas soluciones a la implementación”.
Michelle, quien asumió la gerencia de la organización en 2013, expuso en la Cumbre sobre la situación de pobreza imperante en los asentamientos de Latinoamérica y cómo estas se enmarcan en la agenda global. “Los jóvenes derivamos nuestra responsabilidad colectiva por el otro en un contexto actual de sociedades políticamente polarizadas y con espacios limitados de expresión de la ciudadanía”, presentó. En este contexto, resaltó la experiencia de TECHO como un espacio de participación y de denuncia propositiva para acercar a los jóvenes y las comunidades en asentamientos en un diálogo más fraterno.
La sesion, moderada por Tim Lebercht, del Consejo Global de Valores, y discutida por Laura Liswood, del Consejo de Mujeres Lideres Mundiales, y representantes corporativos del Abraaj Group. La propuesta de la representante de TECHO fue de incluir a los asentamientos y a los jóvenes como focos de desarrollo en la Agenda Global 2014.
Los jóvenes participan de la construcción de la agenda mundial
En un esfuerzo para incluir la voz de la nueva generación, este año el Foro Económico Mundial ha invitado a 20 jóvenes de menos de entre 20 y 30 años a participar de la creación de esta agenda.
Durante segundo día de la cumbre, el Foro organizó una Sesión para Diálogo inter-generacional: «»Cómo la generación Y está sumando a sobrellevar las problemáticas más relevantes»». Dentro de las exposiciones, Michelle intervino desde el caso de TECHO, como una iniciativa que busca brindar a los jóvenes un area de educación que el sistema tradicional ha fallado en ofrecer: una comprensión humana de la realidad en las ciudades latinoamericanas.
Economic inequality, growing isolation in mega-cities, and youth unemployment are among the most important issues in which the world needs to focus its efforts, according to the recently held Summit on the Global Agenda 2013, an event in which Michelle Arévalo-Carpenter, the Relations Manager for TECHO-Ecuador, participated.
The event, which took place in Abu Dhabi between the 18th and the 20th of November, brought together a group of experts who, during those two days, exchanged ideas as a part of the Network of Global Agenda Councils of the World Economic Forum, which is made up of more than 80 groups of academic experts, businesses, civil society leaders, and government and intergovernmental organizations.
“This Summit is opportune amid the many unprecedented global challenges that affect our world”, explained Michelle, and then added: “In the current context of uncertainty, we have the challenge to find young, reflexive, and purposefully solutions. This summit provides us with an opportunity to explore innovations to overcome structural poverty. It will be important to not just theorize, but to link the collaboration of the business and government sectors, which is key in implementing these solutions”.
Michelle, who took over management of the organization in 2013, presented at the Summit on the prevailing situation of poverty in the Latin American slums and how they are part of the global agenda. “The young people derive our collective responsibility for one another in a current context of politically polarized societies and with limited spaces for public expressions”, she presented. In this context, the experience of TECHO was highlighted as a space of reflexive and purposeful participation to bring together young people and communities in slums in a dialogue.
The session, moderated by Tim Lebercht, from the Global Agenda Council on Values, and discussed by Laura Liswood, from the Council of Women World Leaders, and corporate representatives from the Abraaj Group. The proposal from the representative of TECHO was to include the slums and youth a focus of development in the Global Agenda 2014.

In an effort to include the voice of the new generation, this year the World Economic Forum has invited 20 young people from at least 20 to 30 years old to participate in the creation of this agenda.
During the second day of the summit, the Forum organized a Session for inter-generational Dialogue: «»How Generation Y is joining to overcome the most relevant issues»». Within the exhibition, Michelle spoke on behalf of TECHO, as an initiative that seeks to give young people an area of education that the traditional system has failed to offer: a human understanding of the reality of Latin American cities.
